Biografía

Michael Magán is a composer born on September 20, 1995, in Huancayo, Peru. From a young age, he showed a deep interest in music, participating in various ensembles in his hometown and at the Salesian school “Santa Rosa.” During his final school years, he became interested in musical composition, a career he decided to pursue professionally. In 2013, he moved to Lima to begin his studies at the National Conservatory of Music (now the National University of Music). That same year, he was recognized by the Provincial Municipality of Huancayo as the winner of the National Floral Games “From Cádiz to the Plaza de la Constitución of Huancayo” with his work Mate Burilado.

During his studies, he was trained by various Peruvian composers such as José Sosaya, Alvaro Zúñiga, Benjamín Bonilla, Dante Valdez, and Nilo Velarde. Later, he developed an interest in electroacoustic music, studying under professors Abel Castro and José Ignacio López. He also attended masterclasses and talks with internationally renowned composers such as Krzysztof Penderecki, Freddy Vallejos, Rodrigo Sigal, Arturo Márquez, Jimmy López, Juan Arroyo, and Jaime Oliver.

While still a student at the Conservatory, he premiered several works at festivals, recitals, and competitions. Notably, he participated in contemporary music festivals held in Lima, such as La Trenza Sonora, Festival de Jóvenes Compositores, Sinapsis, and recitals organized by the cultural association Musuq. He was also part of the Comunidad de Nuevos Compositores Peruanos (CNCP), a collective with which he organized various premiere recitals.

In 2015 and 2019, he took part in two editions of the Composers and Performers Encounters organized by the National University of La Plata in Argentina. Additionally, Michael was a member of the Laptop Ensemble of the National University of Music (ELUNM). With this ensemble, he participated in the international electroacoustic music festival MUSLAB, held in Mexico City in March 2020.

In the field of musical conducting, Michael attended various masterclasses and seminars with conductors such as Marnix Willem Steffen, Armando Sánchez Málaga, and Dante Valdez. He also completed a music education workshop offered by the NGO Erart.

In 2019, his work Canto Fecundo won second place in the choral composition competition Taki, organized by the National University of Music. In the same competition, his choral version of the muliza Falsía earned third place in the musical arrangement category.

Michael has worked as a sound composer in various interdisciplinary collective creation projects. In 2019, he was selected to take part in the interdisciplinary Artistic Residency Proyecto Danza, held in the city of Cusco. He also contributed to Bicentenario and País del Mañana, works produced by the Higher School of Dramatic Arts (ENSAD) and directed by Ricardo Delgado. Likewise, in 2023, he composed the music for El Siervo, a production by the artistic collective Angel Demonio. With this group, he participated in the Colombian Theatre Festival in Medellín, Colombia. In 2025, he began working with the stage project Peregrina. Additionally, together with Daniel Laureano, he forms an audiovisual experimentation duo called Pareidolia Espectral.

In 2021, his piece Danza Mecánica was selected for the Seoul International On-Line Composition Festival, organized by Neue Musik Korea. In 2022, he was selected to take part in the Modular Synthesis Artistic Residency Circuito Abierto, organized by the National University of Music of Peru. In 2023, he was selected to participate in the MIXTUR festival held in Barcelona, where he had the opportunity to study with Miguel Azguime and attend a composition workshop for clarinet with Martin Adámek. In June 2025, he took part in the Bled Contemporary Music Week, organized by .abeceda institut in Bled, Slovenia, where he premiered his work Chacana. In July of the same year, he received a scholarship to attend Sound Writings & Soundings, an artistic residency of the Darmstadt Summer Course in Germany. During the week, he attended various classes and performed a live electronic set.

Having returned to his hometown in 2021, Michael has been actively involved in the cultural life of Huancayo. As a cultural manager, he leads a space called Nodo Sonoro, through which he has organized various concerts and theatre productions. Among these, the audiovisual experimentation concert series Disociar stands out, now in its fourth edition. He also works as a teacher of harmony, counterpoint, arranging, and other theoretical courses at the Richard Wagner Higher School of Artistic Training. Additionally, since 2024, he has conducted the Polyphonic Choir of Universidad Continental and, since 2025, the Polyphonic Choir of the Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Junín.

He is particularly interested in timbral and sonic experimentation, both instrumental and electronic. His works have been premiered at various festivals, recitals, and competitions in Peru, Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, France, Germany, Slovenia, and South Korea. He also works as an independent composer, creating music for theatre and dance productions for various artistic collectives in Lima, including the scenic collective Angeldemonio. He is also a member of the audiovisual experimentation duo Pareidolia Espectral.

Sus obras han sido estrenadas en diversos festivales, recitales y concursos en Perú, México, Argentina, Uruguay, Francia, Alemania, Eslovenia y Corea. Por otro lado, trabaja como compositor independiente musicalizando obras de teatro y danza para diversos colectivos artísticos en Lima, entre ellos el colectivo escénico “Angeldemonio”. Además, integra el dúo de experimentación audiovisual “Pareidolia espectral”.

Participa activamente de la vida cultural en Huancayo, su ciudad natal. Como gestor cultural, ha estado a cargo de la organización de diversos conciertos de experimentación audiovisual y obras de teatro. Por otro lado, trabaja como docente de cursos teóricos en la Escuela Superior de Formación Artística “Richard Wagner”. Además, dirige el Coro Polifónico de la Universidad Continental, el Coro Polifónico de la DDC Junin y lidera un espacio cultural llamado Nodo Sonoro.
